Wheeled out

DAILY TELEGRAPH, 6 April 1991

------------------------------------------------------------

FIVE years after the most famous design flop in recent history, the little white ghost of the C5 is still haunting its inventor. When Sir Clive Sinclair agreed to open this month's Design Council's exhibition of famous British inventions, he did not realise that it would also feature a couple of heroic failures: the Advanced Passenger Train and a certain ill-fated electric vehicle.

'Are they including the C5?,' a bemused Sinclair asked me yesterday. 'How very sad. Maybe they want to show the good, the bad and the ugly.' Even so, Sinclair may have the last laugh. Currently on his drawing board are designs for a fully collapsible bicycle - a concept that has eluded designers for generations - and something looking suspiciously like a little electric car.
