The 1970s were
a time of triumph and trouble for Sinclair. The
first half of the decade saw Radionics
consolidating its position as a manufacturer of
cheap hi-fi quipment, before creating the first
truly pocketable calculators. But by the end of
the decade, financial disasters caused by
ill-conceived products like The Black Watch had
driven Radionics into dependency upon state
subsidies and ultimately to virtual receivership.
However, the seeds of a new industry would be
sown with the launch in 1978 of Sinclair's first
computer.
